In 1829, fearful of armed conflict in Ireland, George IV and his ministers allowed the passing of the Roman Catholic Relief Act. This allowed Catholics to hold public office for the first time in 150 years. Stonyhurst is home to a Roman Catholic school. Reading this composition allegorically, the mounted figure’s pose represents the government’s U-turn, the crowd on the left the Protestants who opposed emancipation, and on the right the Catholics and their supporters welcoming the legislation. Storm clouds are moving away, leaving the college bathed in light and crowned with a rainbow’s symbol of hope.
