Technique and condition
The following entry discusses eleven drawings by Paula Rego, T05538-T05548.
Pen and ink drawing on machine-made white cartridge paper. The perforated left side edge of eight of the drawings (T05538-T05543, T05546, T05548) indicates that the sheets were torn out of a spiral bound sketch book, the other three sheets (T05544, T05545, T05547) have been trimmed. Each drawing has been individually numbered in pencil on the verso in the top left corner.
The images have been drawn in pen and brush, with ink washes of mainly one or two shades of brown and a few splashes of diluted black in the sky and shadows. The support is slightly buckled where the ink washes have been applied.
On acquisition the drawings were mounted onto white conservation board attached by Japanese paper hinges. At the artist's request, the mounts were made to overlap slightly the edges of the drawings to hide the perforated left edge. They were then framed in simple L-section frames.
