Online caption
LS Lowry’s combination of observation and imagination often made images that captured a deep experience of place which was relatable to others. Like many of Lowry’s pictures, this work does not depict a particular place but instead is based on memories of a school in Lancashire. Lowry often used repeating patterns in his work, and his buildings and figures were simplified to create a feeling of an ‘authenticity’, in keeping with his everyday subject-matter.
