Online caption
Augustus John visited Jamaica with his family in 1937, staying near Kingston. While there, he painted several portraits of the women who worked in the hotel where he was staying. John only documented the names of a small number of his Jamaican models and didn’t note the name of the sitter here. John’s visit to Jamaica coincided with a series of local protests against poor wages and working conditions.
