Miss Kathleen Jessie Raine, poet, was born in 1908, studied at Girton College, Cambridge, and is the author of Stone and Flower 1943, Living in Time 1946, The Pythoness 1949, The Year One 1952, and Collected Poems 1956. The bust was made in 1954. The artist wrote about the sittings (12 April 1959): ‘It was spread over a period of 2 months perhaps and she came in once or twice a week. Living just along the road it was fairly easy, and that is the way I saw her working in her own room, through the window from the street, so I asked her if she could transport herself into my studio sometimes and go on with her work - which she did. It was very enjoyable for me.’
