Display caption
This etching has a surreal quality typical of Lucian Freud’s early portraits. He frequently emphasised the large, almond-shaped eyes of his wife, Kathleen Garman. Freud drew the image using a line and dot technique he developed in the 1940s. Each element is differentiated by the type of etched marks: dots for the face, wiry etched lines for the hair and rounded lines and dots for the fingers. The shape of the leaf is modelled with blank and etched areas.
