Bourgeois made a number of works in the late 1960s that had the ability to combine both masculine and feminine elements. This hanging sculpture combines two ‘mirror image’ phallic aspects, both made by casting an original sculpture. The two-headed ‘Janus’ takes its title from the Roman god who is usually depicted with two faces, looking back into the past and forwards into the future.
