In the thirties, up to 1938, Adrian Allinson usually spent part of each spring and summer in the Mediterranean area with Heinrich Schroeder, a German painter. During a period of four years around c.1933 Allinson made visits to Ibiza; these visits were reflected in several Ibizan pictures, landscapes and two paintings of market scenes. Then each winter he often executed paintings at his studio at 87a Clifton Hill, London NW8, from drawings made abroad earlier in the year. However, as no drawings for T01864 are known the picture may have been painted in Ibiza.
According to the donor, who kindly supplied the information for this entry, the scene depicted was little changed when she visited Ibiza in 1972.
